My submission to the Daily Picture Theme "extinct" on X was this photo I took at the 2025 Mecum Vintage and Antique Motorcycle Auction in Las Vegas.
Grok AI says this about my X post
This post replies to the #DailyPictureTheme prompt "Extinct" with a photo of a 1950s Vincent Comet 500cc single-cylinder motorcycle displayed at a Las Vegas collector auction, noting the brand's discontinuation in 1955.
Vincent motorcycles, produced in England from 1928 to 1955, were celebrated for engineering innovations like the unit-construction engine in the Comet model, which offered reliable 30-35 hp performance but succumbed to postwar market shifts.
The image's "Do Not Start Vehicle" tag underscores the bike's preserved, non-operational state, symbolizing how auction events revive interest in extinct marques through visual storytelling rather than rides.

The seller said it was ridden every week and has a video from the auction listing.
I don't know what this one sold for but at Bring A Trailer they have sold from the upper $20,000 and up
Why do I think this might be more fun to ride than the bigger and more famous Vincent? The Comet is lighter, handles great, and while not as fast, it is (was) fast enough to have fun at slower speeds. Plus I bet that single 500cc exhaust sounded great. A classic thumper.
The auction is an excellent opportunity to see some of the motorcycles you might have heard about or read about. You'll also encounter many bikes you're familiar with and many you may not have heard of before.
When I visit, it brings back many memories of motorcycles I owned, those my friends owned, and the enjoyable rides we took together. Not everyone is still around, which can be somewhat emotional.
It's not just about "old." There are new custom-built bikes, former race bikes, on-road and off-road models, posters, artwork, and plenty more to see.
You can watch and participate in the auction, but you can also explore the back area where upcoming bikes are prepared for bidding.
I spend a lot of time in the back, but I also watch the activity in the main room where the bidding takes place. It seems like there are some great deals to be found.
If you're like me and enjoy browsing, the best day to visit is the first day when all the motorcycles are present and haven't yet been sold and loaded onto shipping trucks. By the last day, many of the bikes are gone.
